Bookbinding

Our two-year, comprehensive Bookbinding program teaches students how to make, restore, and preserve books and other printed treasures.

Learn the history and development of this traditional craft while developing a host of necessary hand skills including creating and repairing cloth, paper, and leather bindings, building boxes and protective enclosures, traditional paper marbling, and more.

You'll work hands-on at a dedicated bench space and learn outside the classroom at binderies, historic collections, exhibits, private studios, and conservation labs. You'll also pursue additional projects reflecting your personal career goals in conservation, fine binding, or other areas of the field.

In addition to our Career Training program, we offer short-term Conmmunity Education courses for students of all levels. Some workshops include Fundamentals of Bookbinding, Paper Marbling, Introduction to Conservation, Miniature Bookbinding,Travel Journals, Medieval Long & Link Stitch Bindings, Ethiopian Bookbinding, and Blind & Gold Tooling on Leather.
