Dear friend,

I hope this note finds you well, and that you’re weathering this unprecedented moment as best you can. Know that you, your family, your work, and our shared community are in our thoughts; we’re all in this together.

Since our building closure on March 11, NBSS has upended its educational model. The move into online instruction is no small feat, and our community has flexed like never before in response. The creativity, passion, and willingness to stay the course has been truly inspiring. We should all applaud the work done thus far; it’s a testament to the strength and character of our community.

With a resolute but heavy heart, I must announce that NBSS will not return to in-person work or teaching this semester. This acknowledges the conditions happening around the world, the Governor’s orders for non-essential business to remain closed through early May, and our outlook on the most responsible actions to respond to this public health crisis.

Beyond instruction, the extended closure will affect us in other ways. Both our Annual Celebration of Craft and our graduation exercises will be postponed until the fall. We feel these events should be in person, when we’re able to gather again. More information on these activities will be shared in the weeks ahead, via email and our COVID-19 webpage. You can also find a list of resources for artisans and small businesses here that may be helpful.

This challenge calls on the full extent of our talents and the commitment of the community. Even as our character and resolve is tested in the time ahead, we will continue good work, encouraging others when we can, and providing help where it’s needed—together as NBSS.

My best to all,

Sarah Turner

President
